You Distort Two Perfections – Depth as Intrusion

You Distort Two Perfections – Depth as Intrusion is an interactive installation that stages the encounter between two autonomous systems: a geometric order and a slime-mold-inspired agent network.

Both systems operate according to their own internal logic and appear as distinct forms of “perfection.” The geometric layer is rigid, continuous, and deterministic, while the slime-mold network is decentralized, adaptive, and exploratory.

These two systems coexist within the same plane. However, their stability is continuously threatened by the intrusion of external reality.

Concept

The work does not represent reality.

Instead, reality is introduced as a destabilizing condition.

Real-time depth data captured from the presence of viewers is injected directly into the system. This data does not function as an image or representation, but as a structural disturbance that deforms the geometric surface and disrupts the behavior of the agent network.

As a result, the geometric order collapses into unpredictable configurations, while the slime-mold agents continue to search for paths within an unstable and constantly shifting environment. Moments of hesitation, misalignment, and unexpected reconfiguration emerge.

In this system, the viewer does not control the work. Their presence only alters the conditions under which the system operates.

Visual Language

The work is visually restrained and largely monochrome.

Instead of color, it relies on minimal lighting and depth-derived gradients, producing subtle variations between light and shadow. This reduction emphasizes the tension between order and collapse, continuity and fragmentation.

At times, the distorted surface may evoke fleeting anthropomorphic forms, but these are not fixed representations. They continuously dissolve as the system evolves.

Structure

The installation is based on three interacting layers:

              •             Geometric System

A deterministic, rule-based structure derived from Islamic geometry and early Escher-like tessellations.

              •             Agent System (Slime Mold)

A decentralized network of agents that explores the environment through local sensing and path formation.

              •             Intrusion Layer

External inputs - including real-time depth data, which continuously destabilize both systems.

The work emerges from the interaction of these layers rather than from a predefined composition.

Technical Information

Software

Unity – Standalone Application (pre-built for exhibition)

Hardware (Development Environment)

              •             Intel RealSense D455f depth camera (recommended)

              •             Computer capable of running the Unity standalone application

              •             Projector or large display

Input Sources

              •             Real-time depth data (viewer presence)

Operation

              •             The system runs as a standalone executable application built with Unity.

Launch “You Distord Two Perfections.exe” first.

              •             The application can be force-quit at any time by pressing the ESC key.

Notes

              •             At the first launch, an error dialog may appear.

This is a known issue. Clicking “CLOSE” will allow the application to start normally.

The error will not appear again until the next restart of the system.

              •             For optimal performance and stability, the use of Intel RealSense D455f is recommended, as this is the hardware used during development.

Installation

The work is presented as a projection or large display in a dim or darkened space.

A depth camera captures the presence of viewers in front of the installation. Their movement introduces continuous disturbances into the system.

The audience does not directly interact with the work in a conventional sense. Instead, their presence alters the conditions under which the system evolves.

Statement

The installation explores a condition in which multiple forms of order are continuously destabilized by external reality.

Rather than representing the world, the work treats reality as an intrusion. These intrusions do not carry meaning; they act as forces that threaten the coherence of the system.

In this unstable field, moments of collapse and reconfiguration emerge, revealing a fragile balance between structure and disruption.
